It is very common for Indian seafarers to find thousands of rupees deducted as TDS in their Form 26AS—usually by banks deducting 30% TDS on NRO accounts or mutual fund companies withholding tax on investments.
How to Reclaim Your Deducted TDS
- Validate that your pre-validated Indian bank account has PAN and name matched with the tax portal.
- Compile all TDS certificates (Form 16A) issued by banks or mutual fund distributors.
- File your return using ITR-2, claiming your lawful deductions and verifying your non-resident status under Rule 126.
- Track CPC processing on the e-filing portal. Most validated refunds are processed within 21 to 45 days directly via ECS into your bank.
